Billy Corgan dejó entrever que la salida de "Oceania" a finales de este año será un punto de quiebre o de avance para The Smashing Pumpkins. Así lo dijo en una entrevista para Billboard hace unas horas... y ésto me pone muy temeroso de lo que pueda suceder en un futuro.
"Si logramos generar ese sentimiento de que algo está pasando de nuevo y que la banda se vuelca hacía nosotros un poco, creo que los próximos tres o cuatro años serán bastante interesantes para la banda. Creo que si "Oceania" se topa con esa pared con la que se han topado otros materiales, tendremos que detenernos a evaluar hacia dónde vamos porque es una cantidad tremenda de energía la que usamos para al final sentir como si lanzáramos una piedra al océano"
"If we're able to get that sense that something is happening again and get people to rally behind us a bit, I think the next three, four years will be very interesting for the band. I think if ['Oceania'] basically hits the same wall a lot of the other stuff has hit, we're going to have to step back and really evaluate where we're going, because it's a tremendous amount of energy to put out to just feel like you're throwing a pebble in the ocean."
Corgan dijo que sobrestimó el impacto de publicar música directamente a internet y eso lo hizo regresar a hacer un álbum en al forma tradicional para tener un impacto real -recuerden que Billy era un entusiasta del internet y por ello el lanzamiento del proyecto de "Teargarden By Kaleidiscope" gratuitamente en este medio-.
Cuando le preguntaron sobre regresar a esta forma tradicional de publicar, Corgan contestó: "Tan sólo vi que no estábamos teniendo esa penetración que esperaba en la gente, quiero decir, tenemos 1.3 millones de seguidores en nuestra página en Facebook, ¿no? Así que piensas que si subo un corte 1.3 millones de personas lo verán, pero sólo si están mirando exactamente en el momento en el que la subimos. Ellos no están necesariamente buscando y sus amigos no necesariamente les dirán sobre ello. Tan sólo me di cuenta que no estamos llegando al tipo de personas que aun siguen obteniendo su información en la forma tradicional y con los medios tradicionales. Así que pensé, '¿Qué tengo que hacer?' y luego pensé, 'Ok, regresaré a hacer un álbum'".
"I just saw we weren't getting the penetration in to everybody that I would have hoped. I mean, we have 1.3 million followers on our Facebook page, right? So you think you put a song up and 1.3 million people are going to see it, but only if they're looking at the exact moment it goes up. They're not necessarily searching and their friends aren't necessarily going to tell them about it. I just saw that we weren't reaching the sort of casual person who still gets their information from traditional sources. So I thought, 'What do I need to do?' and then I thought, 'OK, I'll go back to making an album.'"
Corgan también habló sobre "Oceania" y dijo que contiene: "Algo de lo más prolífico que he hecho en mi vida pero, de alguna forma, también rockea muy duro. Es probablemente el álbum con sonido más abierto que he hecho. La descripción general que tengo de la gente que ya lo escuchó es que les recuerda a los Pumpkins en la manera que los Pumpkins les gustaban, pero, de alguna forma, suena nuevo."
"Some of the most melodic work I've ever done, but somehow it rocks pretty hard, too. It's probably the most open-sounding album I've ever made. The general description I've heard from people who have heard it is that it reminds them of the Pumpkins in the way they like the Pumpkins, but somehow it sounds new."
